There are of course differences, depending on the type of fish and the nature of the aquarium. Our guide will help you with the general cleaning of the aquarium.

How To Clean Aquarium Glass & Acrylic – Best Steps
Clean Aquarium Glass – why?
Fish need oxygen to breathe. The more dirt and grime swims around in the aquarium, the less oxygen the water can hold, which in turn endangers the survival of the fish.
In addition, dirty aquarium water is an ideal breeding ground for algae to develop. When algae die, they use up a large amount of oxygen and, in extreme cases, can deprive the water of all oxygen.
The cleaning of the aquarium begins with the water change
Under no circumstances should you completely replace all of the water at once, as this could endanger the fish. An abrupt change in the habitat irritates the fish and can become sick or even die.
If you clean your aquarium regularly, you only need to change around 15 percent of the water each time you change the water. If you haven’t changed for a while, you should change around 25 percent of the water. If you are unsure, ask a specialist. This is how you can clean your aquarium:
- Change the water by directing the required amount into a bucket using an aquarium hose with a suction aid.
- Discard the extracted water and then fill the bucket with the same amount of fresh water. You should make sure that the water is at the right temperature for your fish (around 18 degrees for cold water fish and 25 degrees for tropical fish).
Be sure to use a thermometer to determine the water temperature. You should also make sure that the bucket and hose that you use to change the water are only used for this. In any case, it should be free of any cleaning agents.
Seaweed & Eliminate bacteria, Clean the aquarium filter
Eliminating algae from your aquarium is relatively easy. All you need is an algae magnet, available at most pet stores.
- Wipe the algae magnet along the inside of the glass to remove the algae. To remove stubborn accumulations of algae, you can also carefully brush along the glass with a clean brush with hard bristles.
Avoid using sharp objects to remove algae, such as razor blades. These can damage the glass and be dangerous for the fish if you leave them in the tank during cleaning.
To remove bacteria, you need to devote yourself to the sand or gravel and decorations in the aquarium.
- To remove bacteria from the gravel, hold the aquarium hose about an inch above its surface while a helper gently runs their fingers through the gravel. This movement brings old food scraps and dirt to the surface, from which they are then sucked off with the help of the hose.
- To clean decorations, remove them and wash them with an effective detergent. Wash them off thoroughly with clean water before putting the parts back in the aquarium.
Don’t forget to clean the aquarium filter every now and then. How often this should happen depends on a number of factors. As a rule, however, once a month should be sufficient.
Remove the filter, disassemble it into individual parts and then carefully clean them with clean water. Under no circumstances should you use detergents or hot water; this would also kill the beneficial bacteria sitting in the filter.
Clean Aquarium Glass
When you have finished cleaning the inside of the aquarium, move on to the outside of the glass. The cleaning is carried out according to the same principle as cleaning the window.
- Wipe the glass with a damp rag and some vinegar to remove dirt and fingerprints. Let everything dry and then polish with a soft cloth.
- To remove stubborn stains, use an effective glass cleaner, for example from Viss , to clean the outside of the aquarium glass so that you can see your little friends even better.

Never change all of the water in the tank at once, only about 15 – 25 percent at a time Remove algae with an algae magnet Clean the filter by removing it and dismantling it into individual parts You can clean the glass from the outside, just like your windows or mirrors
