A base cabinet for an aquarium can be built by yourself in many ways. For DIY enthusiasts, both wood and Ytong bricks are ideal building materials for a heavy pool of water. We want to show you How to Build a Fish Tank Stand from aerated concrete blocks.
Substructure for the base cabinet
In order to evenly distribute the forces that act on the ground from the heavy pool, a strong slab should be placed under the bricked part. So you can even build an aquarium cabinet on precious parquet without worrying about trouble with the landlord. In addition, this cabinet can even be taken with you when you move.
Build a Fish Tank Stand: 6 Steps
- Floor wooden panel
- Cover plate
- Aerated concrete blocks
- Tile glue
- silicone
- Sealing / color
- Tiles / Grout
- Saw
- Trowel
- Notched spatula
- spatula
- Paddle
- Bucket
Lay the base plate
The bottom plate should be a little wider on the sides than the aquarium. There should also be some air left at the front and back . If the subsurface is slightly uneven, you can install impact sound insulation here, as is used when laying laminate.
Plan supporting walls
Of course, a different stability must be created for each size and shape of aquarium. As a rule of thumb, you should not set up the upright support walls more than about 40 to 50 centimeters apart. The outer stands should be exactly where the edge of the aquarium is.
Cut aerated concrete to size
Cut all the stones beforehand so that you don’t have to touch the tile adhesive as often later and you can work through it in one go. The aerated concrete blocks can easily be cut to size with an old saw.
Glue aerated concrete
If possible, place the first layer of stones on the wooden plate on the floor with silicone so that the wood is not loosened by the moisture.
Even if one always speaks of walls, this type of stone is basically glued together . Tile adhesive is ideal for this. You apply it in a thin layer with a notched trowel and then place the stones on top of each other. Any adhesive that oozes out should be scraped off immediately with a spatula.
Protect aerated concrete against moisture
The aerated concrete block can also be made waterproof with the tile adhesive . You can spread it over the entire surface of the dried stones and peel it off smoothly or even create a rough plaster pattern. If the tile adhesive is painted after it has dried, the cabinet looks like a solid wall.
Put on the cover plate
If possible, the cover plate should not be attached with tile adhesive. Silicone is also better suited here, as it compensates for the pressure like a cushion and does not dissolve the wooden plate.
