Aquarium: How to Clean a Fish Tank?

You have taken water from the aquarium and have “reserved” the fish. Do not completely dispose of the remaining water because you need to replace a maximum of one third of the aquarium contents. The ecosystem of your fish depends on the bacteria that have developed there, it is important not to remove them. Remove all items and clean the bin with a clean cloth or sponge. Do not use detergents. There are aquarium cleaning products on the market.

If you want to make your product yourself, dilute 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 300 milliliters of water and clean the edges with this mixture. Consider using a cotton swab for the corners.

Aquarium: clean the filter well

Wash the decorations in clean water or, if they are very dirty, let them soak for 3 hours in your water with the addition of baking soda. Scrub with a small brush and rinse. For the filtration system, proceed without aquarium cleaner. Do not use hot or too cold water as this will kill bacteria necessary for the fish environment. Avoid wringing out the foams on the filter, as you may damage them.

At the end of cleaning your aquarium, it is normal that they are still colored. It is good to clean the mechanical parts of the filter with lukewarm water with a small toothbrush. Rinse your gravel in a colander and mix with your hands to loosen the dirt. Then put all the elements back into the clean aquarium, fill, without lifting the residual dirt, a third of the aquarium with the water you reserved the day before. Fill the remaining two-thirds with the old water, then add the fish.

Other solutions to maintain your aquarium

To avoid thoroughly cleaning it too often, you can add living items that are cleaner fish. They will take care of washing the walls. Using an aquarium vacuum can be beneficial for large areas. It allows you to rid your aquarium of its impurities without sucking up the gravel.
